SEND THEM UP
THE FORMAT
More and more directors are drawing attention to the grievances in our global societies with relevant films on the topics of climate change, environmental pollution and mass extinction. And with success: while "Our Planet", a British documentary series about the diversity of Earth and nature conservation was the most-watched Netflix documentary of 2019, "Seaspiracy", which was seeking to expose the fishing industry's impact on the world's oceans, was also one of the most popular documentaries of 2021 on the streaming platform.
The documentary "Send them Up" belongs to this ecologically and socially critical genre and even goes beyond that. In addition to taking stock of our precarious global situation, the format primarily takes a look into the future and the approach to secure it for us humans. The impression of the white man who wants to save the world in a missionary manner with a raised index finger is deliberately avoided. We are not looking for culprits, but with the help of people from various disciplines and parts of the world for a solution.
The narrative style is informing and entertaining, but also relentless and honest where it is appropriate. Formats of this kind meet the Zeitgeist and are enjoying increasing popularity. By focusing on the unconventional and daring idea of the protagonist, the format should appeal to an even broader target group than those people who are already interested in the topics of nature and environmental protection.
